Luminous solar concentrator - turn the window into a power sourc

AddTime:2017-04-21 13:29:06

Recently, a new type of solar energy conversion device, the luminous solar concentrator, has come into view. It can make an almost transparent window into a generator and provide energy for people. A recent breakthrough in technology has led to a significant reduction in environmental toxicity, improved light harvesting efficiency and improved color distortion problems. This technological breakthrough has made it possible for the market operation of light-emitting solar concentrator technology, and the future is bound to come into people's side.
The idea of turning any window into an available power in the sun is not a whim, and the idea of using quantum dots for light-emitting solar concentrators has turned this idea into reality.
It's a window, and it's a power supply
Luminous solar concentrator (LSC) is a new technology to capture sunlight, which may subvert our thinking and utilization of energy. The joint team unit of researchers at the U.S. Department of energy National Laboratory in Los Alamos and Italy Milan Bicocca University, in the latest issue of the journal "Nature Nanotechnology" published by "the heavy metal colloidal quantum dots, a large area of luminescent solar concentrator" colorless as the title of the research results.
Los Alamos national laboratory chief researcher Victor Klimov said: "in this new equipment, through the window a portion of the transmitted light is dispersed in the glass nanoparticles (quantum dots) absorption, and then re emit the visible infrared wavelengths do not see, these wave solar cell is guided to the edge of the window." With this design, an almost transparent window will become a generator on a sunny day, providing air conditioning on a hot day, or powering a heater in the house during the winter.
Both colorless and non-toxic
In April 2014, the research team proved theoretically, the application of quantum dots composite applications is not suitable for the real world, because they are made based on the toxic metal cadmium, and can absorb only a small portion of solar energy, which has resulted in limited light harvesting efficiency, and will have deep yellow or red traces of concentrator on.
In the description of this new research, Department of materials science Antonio physics professor Francesco pointed out: "in order to make this technology as soon as possible to come out from the laboratory to the sustainable building in full potential, no toxic condenser must realize to capture the entire solar spectrum."
So researchers updated methods to solve the coloring problem. "The new device uses a complex composition, often referred to as CISeS, including copper (Cu), indium (In), selenium (Se) and sulfur (S)," Klimov explained. Importantly, these particles do not contain any toxic metals.
He stressed that the CISeS quantum dots provide a uniform coverage of the solar spectrum, thereby increasing the neutral tone of the window, the color is not any sense of distortion. Moreover, the near infrared light emitted by them is invisible to the human eye and is well suited to the most common silicon-based solar cells.
High efficiency and low cost
A key advantage of the results is that the program is fully comparable to the industrial methods of battery casting for assembling high quality polymer windows. In the fabrication process, the quantum dots need to be encapsulated in a high optical quality transparent polymer matrix. The researchers used a combined poly twelve base methacrylic acid salt, which belongs to the acrylic polymer, it can prevent the long side chain aggregation of quantum dots, and give them a "friendly" environment, to allow the package to the polymer while maintaining the characteristics of quantum dot light emitting efficiency.
Francesco said: "we still have to maintain the critical ability to transmit guided light and have no absorption losses to compensate for the high photoelectric efficiency compatible with the true window size.". Aesthetic factors are also crucial to the expectations of an emerging technology."
Postdoctoral work in Los Alamos, before the National Laboratory at present in the field of quantum dots entrepreneurs (UbiQD founder and president) Hunt McDaniel added: "the rest of the work is to solve the cost problem, now this material making quantum dots than previous materials cheaper. We used a new kind of low cost, low risk quantum dot to form a mixture of CISeS, overcoming some of the biggest roadblocks to commercial deployment of the technology."
Both energy saving and environmental protection
The chief researcher at the Italy team, Sergio Brovini said: "on this quantum dot solar window technology, we only show its feasibility in a year ago, but in reality, in the short term will be transferred to the industry, not only allows us to change the roof solar power generator, will change to the whole city architectural style. Including windows."
"It's especially important for densely populated urban areas, and the roof is too small to collect all the energy needed for building," he said." The research team estimated that replacing the skyscrapers do not have power function glass with this technology, such as the New York World Trade Center (72 thousand square meters divided into 12 thousand windows), it will be possible to generate the equivalent of more than 350 apartments need energy.
Blo Vinnie said: "such a quantum dot light-emitting solar concentrator itself can also save energy, and its filtering effect can reduce the power needed for air-conditioning, and reduce the outdoor sunlight into the house caused by warming."
